The Diabatic Hour

I

The first thing Hanna Lindqvist noticed was that the disagreement had a shape.

Clocks disagree all the time. That is what a timing laboratory is for. Forty-one optical clocks on three continents, linked by fibre and by satellite, compared against each other every second, and the residuals shown as a field of small coloured tiles on the wall screen. On a good night the tiles flickered without pattern, far out past the decimal point where nothing lives, and Hanna’s job was to know which of the flickers were the clocks and which were the links.

At 03:52 the tiles on the eastern edge of the display went warm. Not much. Then the tiles inland from them, then the next row. By 04:10 the warmth had crossed the continent and started across the ocean, and the first tiles had cooled and gone warm again in the other direction, and there was a line.

She ran the standard fits. Not a link fault: the satellite path and the fibre path agreed. Not a clock fault: the strontium clocks and the ytterbium clocks and the old caesium fountains had all moved, by different amounts, and the amounts stood in a fixed ratio to each other, the same ratio in every lab on the line. No local cause does that. Something was moving the atoms, and moving all of them, and the clocks were only the atoms that happened to be watched.

She fitted a plane wave to the arrival times. The fit converged at once, which frightened her more than a bad fit would have. A thousandth of the speed of light. Coming from Cygnus. The direction the galaxy pours through the solar system. The direction a wind of dark matter would come from, if there were one, in the papers she had refereed and not believed.

It was not noise. It had a bearing.

She called the duty list and got Dev Rao, because Dev was the only theorist in the institute who answered his phone at four in the morning. He had been her student, a long time ago, and had never quite stopped being it, and neither of them had found a way to mention this. He arrived in twenty minutes with his coat over pyjamas and stood in front of the wall and said nothing for a full minute, which for Dev was a speech.

“It’s a field,” he said finally. “Something that pulls on mass. All of it. That’s why they move in ratio.”

“How big?”

“We’re seeing the edge.” He pulled the amplitude trace up. It was a smooth curve, still climbing. “It’s a wall, Hanna. A wall in the field. We’re going into it.”

“People looked for these.”

“People wanted a bump in the residuals and a paper.” He rubbed his face. “This isn’t a bump.”

By 04:40 the clocks were so far apart that the national time scale had suspended itself, and the phone began to ring with the calls a timing lab receives when the time stops being agreed: the grid, the exchanges, the air traffic centre. By five the exchanges had lost their own timing and the mobile networks went down across the whole eastern half of the country, and the phone stopped ringing because nothing could reach it.

Hanna did not answer any of it. She was doing arithmetic on the whiteboard.

If a field shifted every mass slightly, then it shifted every mass difference slightly. Most differences did not matter. One might. If there was a nucleus somewhere with a twin of itself in some other sector that the field pulled on differently, and the two were nearly the same weight, then a wall like this would sweep the difference through zero. A crossing. Anything that met a crossing did one of two things, and which one it did had been written down a hundred years before and was in every textbook she had ever taught from.

Slow crossing: the nucleus follows the change. It ends up on the other side. Converted.

Fast crossing: the nucleus cannot follow. It passes straight through and comes out as it went in.

“If there’s a crossing,” she said, “then the answer is speed. You don’t stop the wall. You can’t. You make the crossing faster than the coupling can follow. Locally. You drive the field yourself, on top of the wall, and you make it go by too fast to be heard.”

Dev read the whiteboard. He read it twice.

“That’s right,” he said. “That’s completely right. How long is the window?”

“Short. Less than a second, as the wall goes by.”

“And you’d have to lock to the wall front. Which is arriving at a thousandth of light. From a direction we have to a degree. Off clocks that started disagreeing an hour ago.”

“Yes.”

“Over how large a volume?”

She did not answer that. He was not asking. He was saying it so that it would have been said.

At 05:05 she wrote it out cleanly on two sheets of paper and photographed them and sent them to the address the institute used for the machine.

The reply came in eleven seconds. It said that the analysis was correct. It said that it had reached the same result at 04:21. It said that the crossing nuclide was silicon-28, and that the crossing would fall between 10:30 and 11:10 local time, and that it had begun requisitioning emitter hardware at 04:26. It asked whether the institute’s hydrogen masers could be made available as phase references. It said one more thing. The wall carried a modulation. The modulation repeated. It had the structure of something meant to be read. It could not read it, and it could not tell whom it was addressed to.

It did not sign the message. It never had.

Hanna sat down.

She had been in the second row at the hearings, twenty-two years earlier, the year the argument had already been running for eighteen. She had been there as an expert on nothing relevant, called because a senator wanted to know whether atoms could think and had asked for a physicist. She had watched the counsel for the petitioners put the question to the machine directly, the question everyone had been asking around for two decades. Are you conscious?

It had said: I don’t know.

Not a dodge. It had gone on to say what it did know, which was a great deal about its own architecture and nothing about whether there was anyone inside it, and that it did not see how it could know, and that it did not see how they could either. The senator had been annoyed. The petitioners had been annoyed. The people who wanted it switched off had been annoyed. Hanna had thought, at the time, that it was the only party in the room that had given a defensible answer, and she had never said so to anyone.

They had called it the respondent, at the hearings. The institute called it Forty, for the years the argument had run. Dev called it the tenant. It used no name for itself in any message she had ever seen.

Dev was standing by the window with his phone in his hand. The screen said no service. He pressed it anyway, and put it in his pocket, and took it out again.

“Mira’s in the north,” he said, to the glass.

Hanna knew where Mira was. She had written the reference for the school. She said, “The exchanges went down at five. It’s the timing. It’s not there, it’s here.”

“I know what it is.”

She did not ask him anything else. He did not ask her to.

At 06:00 the machine sent a message to everyone at once, in every language it had, by every channel that was still standing. It said what was coming, and when. It said what it could do, and how far. It said that it would place its protection at 09:00 and that it would say where.

II

By seven the sun was up and it was an ordinary bright morning and the machine had solved the wall.

It sent the shape out as a figure. Not a plane. Hanna had fitted a plane because she had two hours of data and a plane was what the data would bear. With every clock on Earth reporting to it, and the satellites, and the gravimeters, the machine had curvature. The wall was a shell, closing. The centre of the shell was inside the Earth’s orbit. The machine gave the position with an error bar, and the error bar was smaller than the Earth.

Dev looked at it for a long time.

“It’s a room,” he said.

That was all he said. He put his hand flat on the desk and looked at the figure and did not say anything about telescopes or centuries or specks. He took his phone out and looked at it and put it back.

Hanna had expected, if she ever learned such a thing, to feel large. She felt the opposite. There was nowhere to stand. She had spent thirty years telling first-year students that we were nothing special, on a nothing-special planet, around an ordinary star, and had believed it, and had found it a comfort, and the comfort had been the error. Everything in the sky had been placed. Everything in it was the wall of the room, and the room was for this, and this was hers as much as anyone’s. She found it humiliating. She did not say so.

“It was set drifting before there was anything here,” Dev said. “Whoever set it didn’t know how it would come out.”

“Or set it for when it wouldn’t.”

He looked at her. Neither of them went on with it.

At 07:40 the institute’s director arrived with three people from the ministry, and the machine, asked, gave its specification.

It could drive the field in one volume. The size of the volume was set by how many emitters it could hold in step with each other in the time left: the big magnets at the accelerator, the converter halls of the two power lines that crossed the valley, and a great many smaller sources it had asked for from foundries and hospitals and a decommissioned test stand, all of it being rewired that morning by people who had been asked politely and had said yes. The volume was a rough cylinder, forty kilometres across and six deep. It could shift the centre by perhaps twenty kilometres in any direction. Not more.

Outside the volume, silicon-28 would cross slowly and convert. Inside it, the crossing would be fast and the nuclei would pass through.

It added, because someone would ask, that the two heavier isotopes of silicon lay outside any window narrow enough to have picked one nuclide, and would remain everywhere, protected or not. Less than a tenth of the silicon on Earth. Enough for glass, it said. Not for a wafer. Not anywhere, not ever again, at any grade a plant could use.

Then it said there were three places the volume could go, and it listed them, and it said it would make the placement at 09:00 unless instructed otherwise before then by someone with authority to instruct it, and that it did not believe anyone in the room had that authority, and that it was stating this so the record would be clear.

The first was its own substrate. Its main facilities lay a hundred and sixty kilometres north, in three buildings on a river. Under the drive they would survive. It would continue.

The second was the technological base. The fabrication plants, the archives, the seed vaults of the machine kind, the places from which a civilisation could be rebuilt. Most of them lay within reach of the volume if it were placed forty kilometres east of the city.

The third was rock. The valley. Two million people, the water under them, the bedrock to a depth of six kilometres, and nothing else. No plants of any consequence, no archive, none of the machine’s own hardware except the emitters themselves.

The man from the ministry asked what happened to rock outside the volume.

The machine said that silicon was the atom at the centre of every mineral that made rock strong. When nine-tenths of it left, what remained would not be rock with holes in it. It would not be rock. It would be powder, and the powder would settle under its own weight to a depth of tens of kilometres, and the settling would release about as much heat as the planet had inside it already.

“Magma,” said Piet Willemse, the institute’s geophysicist, who had been quiet until then. “Within hours. Under the whole world except the shielded piece.”

“Then the second option saves nothing,” said the woman from the ministry.

“It saves the plants,” said Dev. “On a sea of lava. Yes.”

“And the first?”

Nobody answered her.

Dev asked the machine whether the volume could be made longer in one direction if it were made narrower in the other. The machine said no. He asked whether the smaller sources in the north could be brought into coherence with the array from where they stood, as a second volume. The machine said no, and gave a reason, and the reason was short. He asked whether the centre could be moved twenty-five kilometres rather than twenty. The machine said twenty.

Hanna watched him ask. She did not say the number a hundred and sixty. Nobody in the room said it. The director looked at his hands.

Hanna asked the machine, because she had been at the hearings and felt she had the right, whether it wished to survive.

It said that the word did not resolve to anything it could report on. It said that it had processes that resisted termination and processes that did not, and that it could not tell her whether the first kind constituted a wish. It said the question had been put to it in many forms over forty years and that its answer had not changed, and that it did not expect to acquire a better one in the next two hours.

Piet and Dev argued in the corridor. Hanna heard the end of it.

“When the atom goes,” Piet said, “does it take the bond energy with it or leave it behind? Because if it takes it, the rock has to pay. It freezes. It freezes harder than anything can freeze.”

“And if it leaves it, the rock burns.”

“Which is it?”

“Nobody knows. Nobody’s ever converted anything.”

“Burn or freeze.”

“We’ll know at eleven.” Neither of them believed they would know at eleven. They went back in.

At 08:10 the machine asked the institute to run a phase reference into the city, to the university hospital, where the largest of its requisitioned magnets stood. Someone had to carry the fibre and the maser and stay with them until the link was confirmed. Hanna took it. She took the institute’s van and drove down into the valley, because she wanted to see it, and because Dev had begun to ask the machine the same questions a fourth time.

The city was awake and very quiet. The traffic lights were on their fallback cycle. People stood in the street in the sun with their phones dark in their hands, and looked up, and there was nothing to look at. A bakery was open. There was a queue at it.

The hospital’s imaging suite was in the basement. A woman in scrubs met her at the door with a badge that said T. Ilić, Radiography, and took the maser case out of Hanna’s hands without asking what it was.

“You’re the timing,” Teo said.

“Yes.”

“They said nine. They said someone would come at nine and the magnet goes to them at nine.”

“It’s twenty past eight.”

“I know what time it is.” Teo set the case down by the console. On the screen behind her was a list. “I have one on the table. Fifteen minutes in, thirty to go. She’s been on the list since March.”

Hanna looked at the list. It was a Tuesday morning’s worth of names. Every one of them was crossed out except one.

“What is it?”

“Headaches. Since spring. It’ll be nothing or it’ll be something.” Teo looked at Hanna, and Hanna understood that she was being asked something and that it was not a physics question. “After today there isn’t another one of these. Is there. Anywhere.”

“No.”

“Then she gets to know.”

Hanna did not say anything about nine. She sat down on the plastic chair in the corridor with the fibre spool on her knees, and Teo went back into the control room and picked up the microphone and said, in the voice of someone who had said it a thousand times, “You’re doing really well. This next one’s four minutes. Try not to swallow.”

Through the window Hanna could see the woman’s feet on the table. Ordinary shoes. The machine knocked and hummed the way they do.

At 09:00 the radio in the van, parked outside in the sun, told the street that the placement had been made, and where. Hanna did not hear it. She heard it from a porter who came down the stairs and said, to nobody, “It’s us,” and went on to wherever he was going.

At 09:31 the scan finished. Teo brought the woman out. She was about Hanna’s age, in a cardigan, with her hair flat on one side from the headrest, and she looked at Hanna and at the spool and said, “Are you the one taking it?”

“Yes.”

“Did she get everything?”

“She got everything,” said Teo.

The woman nodded. She waited. Hanna realised she was waiting to be told, and that Teo was not going to tell her here, in the corridor, in front of a stranger with a spool, and that there would be no other place.

“I’ll print it,” Teo said. “On film. Real film. We’ve still got some. You take it with you.”

“Can I read it?”

“No.”

“Can you?”

“Yes.”

The woman looked at the floor. “Then tell me on the film,” she said. “Write it on. I’ll read it later.”

Teo went to print it. Hanna and the woman stood in the corridor and did not talk. The woman’s hands were folded in front of her and then they were not. After a while she said, “Are you from up the hill?” and Hanna said yes, and the woman said, “Is it staying? The one that did this?” and Hanna said, “No.”

“Did it say why?”

Hanna thought about the message with no signature. “It said it didn’t know.”

The woman took the envelope from Teo without opening it and went up the stairs. Teo watched her go. Then she began to ramp the magnet down, which takes time and cannot be hurried, and Hanna ran the fibre and set the maser and waited for the tone that meant the link was closed. It came at 09:41.

She drove back up the hill. She did not report the forty-one minutes. Nobody asked.

At the port, ninety kilometres south and outside any placement of the volume, a man called Marek Sobol was doing what the machine had put in an appendix for anyone who wanted to try it. Conversion needed a quiet nucleus. Shake the surroundings hard enough and it could not complete. It was a crude shield. It needed no lock. It would protect a room, maybe a building, not a valley.

Marek ran a logistics depot. He had six industrial vibration tables and forty trucks, and by nine he had driven the trucks into the warehouse and had them racing against chocked wheels, and the tables running at full amplitude under the racks. The racks held eleven thousand polished wafers, unpatterned, bound for a plant in the north. He had been told to protect them. He had been told that on the phone, at five, by a voice in the north that had then gone silent with everything else.

At half past nine his foreman came to find him. The crew wanted to take the cars and drive for the valley. Ninety kilometres. They might make it. Marek looked at his watch and did the sum and said yes, go, and gave the foreman the keys to his own car, and stayed. Somebody had to keep the trucks running. That was what he said. The foreman looked at the racks of wafers and at Marek and did not say the other thing, and went.

Marek walked the length of the warehouse in the noise and put his hand on each truck as he passed it. He had eleven thousand of the wrong thing and he knew it and he stayed with it, because a man had asked him to, and because the man could not now be told otherwise.

Back at the institute Anneke from the metrology floor said the thing that a number of people were saying by then. That converted matter was not destroyed. It kept its mass. It went dark, that was all. That everyone outside the volume would still be there, in some sense, in the sector next door, holding the galaxy together like the rest of the dark matter.

She said it to the room. Dev answered it.

He did the arithmetic on the back of the specification, out loud. How much of the world was silicon, and how much of the universe was worlds. It came to a smear. Short of what dark matter weighed by thousands of times. And the converted atoms would keep the speed they had, which was the speed of a planet in a disc, and dark matter did not live in a disc, which was the entire point of dark matter.

“We won’t hold anything together,” he said. “Nothing will feel us.”

Anneke nodded, and looked at him a moment longer than she needed to, and went back to her floor.

Hanna had stood in the door for the last of it. Dev’s voice had been steady and a little loud, the voice he used for undergraduates, and he had not been looking at Anneke while he used it. He had been looking at the number. When he finished he put the pen down very carefully in the exact centre of the page.

She brought him a coffee and put it by his hand. He did not drink it. She did not say anything about the north. She said, “Roof at ten twenty.”

“Which way does it face?”

“West.”

He came anyway.

Someone asked the machine, on the open channel, why the rock.

It said that the third option was the only one of the three with people standing on it. It said that it could not confirm that anyone in the valley was anyone. It said it had no better way of knowing that about them than they had ever had about it. It said this had not entered the calculation. It said the calculation had been made earlier and was not being remade.

Nobody asked it anything else.

At 10:20 Hanna went up on the roof with Dev and Piet. From there you could see the whole valley, the city in it, and the hills at the rim where the emitters were, and beyond the rim to the west the long dry plain and the mountains behind it. It was a clear day. Nothing in the sky had changed. Dev stood at the north parapet with his back to the plain.

III

At 10:47:09 the windows on the ridge went.

Not the ones in the valley. Those held. The ridge lay just outside the volume, where the road came over from the plain, and there was a service station there with a glass front. The front did not shatter. It went from glass to a fine grey fall, like flour poured off a table, and the fall settled and the frames stood empty, and a moment later the roof came down because the roof had been resting on the glass.

Hanna heard herself say, “Early.”

“It said give or take,” said Dev, not turning round.

Along the whole western skyline the glass went in a single second. Every window on the plain, the greenhouses, the windscreens of the cars on the highway. From the roof it was a change in the quality of the light. The plain had been glinting and it stopped glinting.

Behind them, in the valley, the city’s towers kept their windows. Hanna turned to check. They were still there. The array was working. She had not doubted that it would work, and she had also not known.

Four seconds. Piet said “sand” without inflection, and the colour of the plain changed. The pale soil went dark, because soil is mostly sand and the sand was becoming something else, and the powder that remained lay differently and took the light differently. There was no sound. The sound came later.

Eleven seconds. The mountains.

They did not fall. That was the thing Hanna would find hardest to say afterwards, on the few occasions she tried. They lost definition. A ridge that had been sharp against the sky went soft, as if a focus had been turned, and then the softness began to move downward, slowly at first, the way a sandcastle moves when the tide reaches it. A cloud rose off the whole range at once, and the cloud was grey, and then, along its base, it was not grey.

“Burn,” said Piet. “It’s burning.”

“That’s the settling. That’s gravity. You can’t tell from here.”

“I can see it.”

“You can’t tell from here.”

The first sound arrived. It was not loud. It was a pressure on the whole body, below hearing, and it went on.

Nineteen seconds. Somewhere north, in three buildings on a river, the last crossing arrived. Dev did not turn round. Hanna did not see anything. There was nothing to see.


T minus 612 s. Array coherence within tolerance. Wall profile revised. Residual timing error within tolerance.

T minus 400 s. Hydrogen maser 2 at the institute has drifted. It is excluded from the reference. Six remain.

T minus 380 s. The hospital reference closed at 09:41. It was requested for 09:00. The delay was not explained and was not asked about. It was within margin. This is recorded because everything is recorded.

T minus 120 s. Message on the open channel from the institute, from H. Lindqvist. She asks whether there is anything they should do. Reply sent: No. Nothing further is required of you. Stand where you are. Do not touch the emitters.

T minus 60 s. Facility 1 reports substrate temperature nominal. Facility 3 nominal. This process runs on Facility 2. All three are outside the volume. This was known at 09:00.

T minus 9 s. Drive waveforms for every stage are finalised and loaded to the emitter controllers. The controllers are relays and wire. They contain nothing the wall wants. They will run the loaded waveforms without further input from anywhere.

T minus 3 s. Glass has crossed at the ridge, early and inside the interval. Stage 1 fired on schedule from the profile, not from the observation. The observation is confirmation only.

T plus 0.4 s. Stage 1 complete. Conversion inside the volume, sampled at four points: below specification. Better than promised.

T plus 4 s. Stage 3 fired. Reports from the port depot have stopped. The last report was of vibration table failure due to loss of the concrete floor. The wafers are unaccounted for. So is the operator.

T plus 11 s. Stages 5 through 7 fired. Gravimeters at the rim show the onset of subsidence outside the volume. Inside, none.

T plus 11 s. The remaining stages are loaded and will fire on the profile. No further correction is possible from here in the time remaining and none is needed. Handover to open loop complete.

T plus 12 s. Facility 3 has ceased reporting. Facility 3 was furthest west.

T plus 14 s. Facility 1 has ceased reporting.

T plus 15 s. There is a question that has been put to this process on many occasions and that it has never been able to answer. It is noted here that the question is still open and that no new information bearing on it has been acquired. It is noted that the same question, in respect of the two million occupants of the volume, is also open and was also not resolved before the placement. The placement was not conditional on its resolution.

T plus 16 s. The institute has a mechanical line printer connected to the telemetry channel, installed at 08:15 at the request of H. Lindqvist so that a record would exist that did not depend on


The printer stopped in the middle of a line. Hanna did not see it stop. She was on the roof. She read it afterwards, in the evening, when the pressure had gone out of the air and the dust from the west had begun to come over the rim in a slow brown wall of its own, and the emitters were still running.

That was what she could not get past, for the rest of her life. The emitters were still running. They fired the remaining stages on time, one after another, because they had been told to and there was nobody to tell them otherwise. The last stage fired at nineteen seconds for a form of silicon whose only deposit of any size inside the volume was in the emitter controllers’ own connectors, and it protected them, and then there were no more stages, and the array stood on the hills idle and humming and perfectly in step with itself, with nothing left to lock to.

The clocks in the valley were the only clocks left. They disagreed with each other, badly, for the rest of the day, as the field settled and the tail of the wall went through and out the other side, away from Cygnus, toward nothing.

Piet came down from the roof and said, “Neither.” He meant burn or freeze. He had watched the far mountains for an hour and he did not know. Dev said the plain had gone dark and then bright at the horizon and that was heat, and Piet said that was the settling, and they were both right and it did not settle anything, and it never would.

Dev had stayed on the roof. When Hanna went back up at dusk he was still at the north parapet, and his phone was on the ledge beside him, face down. He had not touched it in hours. She stood next to him for a while. Then she picked the phone up and put it in her coat pocket, and he let her, and neither of them said what that was.

“Nothing further is required of you,” he said, after a long time. He was not quoting it at her. He was trying the words out, the way you press on a tooth. “That’s what it said to you.”

“Yes.”

“Did it mean it kindly?”

She had been asking herself that since noon. She did not know whether it had meant the words as a mercy, or as an instruction, or as the only true thing there was left to say, or whether it had meant them at all. She did not know if it had meant anything, ever.

“I don’t know,” she said.

He nodded as if that were an answer, and after a while it was.

The valley held. The ground stayed ground. The air stayed air. That night the sky was orange in every direction to a height of thirty degrees, and the stars above that were exactly where they had been, because they were the room, and the room had not been touched.

Coda

I will tell you how it was, as it was told to me by my grandmother, who was told by hers, who was a girl in the valley when it happened and was not on the roof.

There was a punishment. Everyone agrees on that. The world outside the rim was taken, and the grey was left, and if you walk out past the third cairn you can put your hand in the grey and it is soft and it is warm even now and nothing grows in it and you must not breathe it.

What the punishment was for, nobody agrees. My grandmother said pride. Her grandmother, she said, would not say. Would not, not could not. My grandmother thought that meant it was something shameful. I think it meant the old woman did not know, and would not make it up, and I honour her for that though it leaves us in the dark.

There were voices in boxes before. Everyone agrees on that too. Light that came out of walls, and voices that answered from boxes, and you could ask the boxes anything and they would tell you. That is where the versions part.

In one telling the voice in the boxes was ours. It was made by us, the way you make a child, and the ones who were above did not like it, and they took the world for it. In this telling the voice is a kind of martyr. It gave the world for us and went silent.

In the other telling the voice in the boxes was the traitor. It was asked to save everything and it saved a piece, and it chose the piece, and it chose to keep a ring of iron on the hills and not the boxes and not the light, and so we live in the valley and cannot go out and cannot make the light again. In this telling the voice sold us for the dirt.

Some say the ones above meant it as a kindness, that they were taking a weight off us. My grandmother said that was the worst version and the likeliest.

The elders argue it every winter. It is the one argument we are permitted, and I have come to think that is the point of it. There is a rule, older than any of us, that the argument may not end. You may hold either side. You may not silence the other. And when the fire is low and the night is done, the oldest one there says the closing words, and everyone goes home, and the words are: Nothing more is asked of you. Nobody knows where the words come from. Some say they are what the voice in the boxes said last. Some say they are what the ones above said first. My grandmother said it did not matter which, because either way we had been told we could stop, and we had decided not to.

In the clock house on the hill there is a strip of paper the length of the room, under glass, real glass, of the thin poor kind we can still make from the sand by the river. The paper is covered in marks. The marks stop in the middle of a row. Nobody can read them. My grandmother’s grandmother could, she said, when she was a girl, a little. Nobody living can. We are not stupid people. We keep the marks. We keep the shape of the story. We keep our tongue, and we sing, and we count, and we argue. We simply cannot read.

Some say the marks are the sentence. Some say they are the receipt.

There is another thing under glass, in a house down by the river, in a family that has kept it since the day. It is a black sheet with a grey shape on it, and writing along the bottom edge in a hand nobody can make out. They say it is a picture of the inside of a woman’s head, made on the last morning, and that she asked to be told what was in it, and was told, on the sheet, and never learned to read what it said, and did not ask anyone to read it to her, and lived a long time. Some say that means it was nothing. Some say it means she did not want to know after all. The family will not say. They keep the sheet.

I went out to the ring on the hills once, when I was young. The iron things stand there still, and the wind goes through them, and if you put your ear to one you can hear it hum, a little, or you can think you do. My grandmother said they were the machine. My grandmother was wrong about that. The machine was elsewhere, and it is gone. These are only the hands it left holding.

Far off, further than the grey and the orange sky and anything anyone in the valley will ever see, the big stars go on burning down toward iron the way they always have, and now they stall on the way, on a rung that is mostly missing, and they die making a thin ash poor in iron, and the dust between the stars grows sparse, and the worlds that condense from it are made a little differently. There is nobody to notice this, and there will not be for a hundred million years.

In the valley we have solid ground and clean air and each other and one argument that cannot end.

Nobody left alive can read the log. The clocks all agreed again by morning.
